Over the past several weeks, we’ve been unpacking the pillars of the SCALE™ framework I developed during one of the most difficult years of my life. If you’ve been following along, you’ve seen how each piece builds on the last. This reflection process is similar to what an estate planning law firm does when carefully crafting a comprehensive plan for its clients.

Now, we come to the “L” in SCALE: Legacy.

Legacy is about more than what you’ll leave behind when you sell, retire, or pass away. It’s about the driving purpose behind your work today. It’s what inspires you, engages your staff, builds your brand, and ultimately defines the impact your firm will have on your clients and your community.

The Golden Circle: Start with WHY

Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle is a helpful model to understand legacy:

  • WHY: Your purpose, belief, or cause—the reason your firm exists and why anyone should care.
  • HOW: The processes, values, and unique actions that bring your WHY to life.
  • WHAT: The tangible services you provide—estate plans, elder law solutions, probate administration.

Too often, law firms focus on the WHAT: “We draft wills, we handle probates, we create trusts.” Some firms even make it to the HOW: “We use a compassionate process, we offer fixed fees, we use technology to improve efficiency.”

But the most successful, scalable firms—the ones that inspire loyalty from clients and staff alike—lead with the WHY.

Why Legacy Matters to Your Estate Planning Law Firm

  • Inspiration. People aren’t inspired by what you do, but by why you do it. Your legacy is the story that moves them.
  • Loyalty. Clients and staff are loyal to firms that stand for something bigger than themselves. A clear WHY creates deeper bonds and trust.
  • Alignment. When your firm has a strong sense of legacy, your team is working toward the same mission. That alignment drives culture and performance.
  • Engagement. Staff don’t get fired up about your revenue targets—but they will rally around a mission that feels meaningful. When they buy into your legacy, they are more engaged, more loyal, and more willing to go above and beyond.
  • Marketing Power. Legacy turbocharges your brand. It becomes your differentiation in the marketplace. Legacy-driven firms can command higher fees, close faster, and attract more referrals because people want to be part of something that matters.
  • Attorney Fulfillment. Legacy also fulfills a deep-seated need for most attorneys: to know their work truly matters. It reconnects you to the reasons you became a lawyer in the first place—helping families, serving communities, protecting dignity.

How to Discover Your Law Firm’s Legacy

Like your WHY, your legacy isn’t something you invent. It’s already inside you. The challenge is to articulate it.

  • Look back at your early experiences—what drove you to become an attorney in the first place?
  • Ask your friends, staff, and even clients: “Why do you work with me?” Their answers will reveal what your legacy really is.
  • Reflect on the outcomes that matter most to you—dignity for elders, security for families, peace of mind for future generations.

Your legacy should become the guiding force of your firm. It informs your vision, energizes your culture, and inspires everyone who encounters your practice.

Legacy Is the Foundation for Law Firm Growth

Building a firm on legacy doesn’t just feel good—it makes your firm scalable and sustainable. It motivates your team, strengthens your culture, and creates a marketplace advantage. And for you, as the owner, it fulfills that deep-seated desire to know your work truly matters.

Legacy is not about someday. It’s about today. And when you build it with intention, your firm will outlast you.

Next in this series: We’ll talk about the final pillar of SCALE—Exit-Ready—and how building a firm on Systems, Culture, Attitude, and Legacy prepares you for a profitable, scalable, and freedom-ready future.
